Observation details
A complete surprise. We were hearing an unfamiliar high pitched call coming from the pond edge. But could not locate its owner. Later saw the sandhill crane standing in the shallow water near pond edge with a great blue heron. At home, after listening to the juvenile call of a sandhill crane online, confirmed the call as juvenile. Bird flew off with the heron when the heron took off. Bob P. also saw the bird vocalize again while in flight. This was a large bird, the size of the heron, large bodied, and with long neck. Reddish crown, rusty plumage on back of neck. Grayish overall. Sun was ahead of us, lighting not good, so photos are not very good, but have included for documentary purposes.
