Observation details
WOW! F 38, 9:30 am. I scared if off the ground, behind a tree trunk right at the marker along the trail. It first hopped, then few into a sapling, 3 meters high or so and sat for 30 seconds, but my bins were fogged and I had to clear them several times during the observation. I was able to see the huge bill, pinkish at the base, broad rusty eye stripe and collar, brown cheek and cap, rusty breast and dark brown mantle. When it flushed I noticed a flash of bright colour but couldn't really discern what it was. It then flew again and I followed. Again it flushed, uttering once a rattle-like call, I described as 'ticky-ticky-ticky-tick', fast and chattery and fairly loud. In the illustration I made the same day, I noted that I illustrated a male although I was pretty sure I saw rusty scalloping on the mantle- juvenile? Field sketch made same day and reworked sketch November 2019.
