Observation details
I almost forgot to add the funny part of this checklist. After initially missing the VEFL, we were cruising the adjacent neighborhood looking for the bird when I spotted a Douglas Fir with a lot of cones that would be good for Red Crossbill and had Brad stop so I could photograph the male House Finch perched atop the fir. While I was photographing the HOFI I heard Pete excitedly said, "I see the crossbill!"- he was so excited looking at his first VEFL that he had crossbill on his mind. Then he said, "No! "I mean the VEFL is sitting atop the pole! Jump out of the car!" After first seeing it where Pete first saw it, it flew back towards the lake and adjacent vegetation where it was originally reported. We then returned to the lake to get excellent photos. The whole incident was hilarious because I felt initially like an idiot because I thought Pete had spotted a crossbill while I was photographing a HOFI!!
