Observation details
This bird gave me a serious workout trying to get decent looks at it. Initially all the way out at the breakwater wall with Scoters, hoped it would move closer and when it didn't, went back to the car to get the binos. In that 15 minutes, RNGR traveled all the way to the canopied part of the pier and thank you to the kind birder who saved me a wasted walk back to the end. In just a matter of minutes, had dove its way to the lifeguard tower from there and then back towards the end of the pier. Similar from a distance to Eared/Horned, except for large yellow bill more like Clark's/Western. Dark cap, stout and straight yellow bill, remnants of gray cheek patch, dirty white below. Neck mostly dark but nape has a warmer tone on sides. Dark gray outerparts.
