Media notes
With the sounds of me walking. You can hear the bird give it’s call at 7 seconds (and see it register visually a little) as I pause to listen to it.
Observation details
(Rare & Unreported) Possibly 2! Appears to be the first Sherman record on eBird. Encountered with a mixed flock in the northwest corner in the line of tall cottonwoods and was very vocal. Later encountered it again (or a different one?) further down the park along the east side by the caretaker's place. That time it was silent and without a mixed flock. Went back to the first spot and played a recording but got no response. So only 1 for sure. Like ruby-crowned kinglet, but bulky with pronounced eyering flaring out behind the eye and whitish lores in front giving a bewildered, curious affect. Stout thick bill, very much unlike a thin and needle like kinglet bills. Steady methodical habits of moving and searching for food, very curious and unwary. Excellent views (both times so close I had to put my bins down, tried to get cell phone photos just point and shoot though none came out). First one was very vocal repeatedly giving stuttering toy-like whiny call. Made an audio recording of it. Both times it (they) showed up while I was pishing and looking at other birds. Then I’d look up and find there was a vireo a couple feet away eye level staring me back, looking benignly baffled much the way I felt seeing one here. Very fun sighting. Really birdy in general in the park, pushed me well over my 100 species mark for the county.
