Observation details
Two birds seen in fairly quick succession in the mature woodlot next to the lake at the base (north end) of Point Petre Road (where CR 24 and Army Reserve Road meet). Presence of first bird was signalled by an agitated Blue Jay. When I approached the sound I looked up in a tree to see a large hawk fly out over my head towards the lake - description - very large accipiter with powerful flight, thick long tail and stocky body. Brown on back, light underneath with brown streaks, distinct pale line over eye. Bird flew across the wide bay to the northwest and disappeared onshore approximately 1 kilometre away. I then followed the track east through the woods toward Point Petre Road. Presence of second bird was signalled about two minutes later by a highly agitated Hairy Woodpecker calling loudly and repeatedly. Upon approaching the woodpecker a hawk flew up from near the ground to a tree almost over my head, again, very large accipiter with powerful flight, thick long tail and stocky body and distinctive white line above the eye. The bird was relatively unwary and allowed me to obtain several photographs confirming the identification.
