Observation details
Arboretum grounds Ambassador found a red-tailed hawk eating another bird on a trail near the South Street / Bussey Street intersection. I met him at the location; the red-tail flew into a nearby tree. Confirmed that the dead bird was a mature male, ringed necked pheasant. It was freshly killed, the red-tail was still plucking its feathers and flew down and resumed doing so after I walked a short distance away. The red -tail attempted to carry it up into a tree a short while later, but could not lift the carcass off the ground. Could have come into the Arboretum from adjacent Bussey Brook Meadow.
