Observation details
Location was along first right-hand turn, coming from Hwy 161 west, onto Lower Klamath Auto Tour, a quarter mile in heading east. This was a surprise bird, it was with two song sparrows on a small grassy island kick scratching. It has an all gray head and back with rufous contrast in the upper tail, wings and streaks on breast. The bill was tiny and somewhat pale. The median and greater wing coverts were edged in white, indicating fresh plumage as in an imm. bird. The back had subtle darker rufous track-lines instead of a plain gray back leading us to the ssp. of Altivagans. The bill was too small for Thick-billed Fox sparrow which is a local nester but leaves in winter. Altivagans summers and nests in British Columbia.
