Observation details
Shortly after our arrival at Back Bay Beach, a tricolored heron was noted flying northward above the Newport Bay channel and landed on the shore just north of the Newport Aquatic Cnter. For 20 minutes it foraged along that shoreline and once was noted to have a 4-5 inch silvery fish in his beak. It then flew west across the channel and landed in tall grasses on Shellmaker Island directly across from the Aquatic Center. Occasionally we could see it moving about in the grasses. As we were preparing to leave our location, it was noted to be flying south above the channel directly in front of us at our face level. White belly and foreneck; chestnut hindneck and wing coverts lead us to believe it is juvenile. These photos were taken while it was on shoreline north of Aquatic center.
