Observation details
This group was found while walking in the wetlands. I assumed them to be Short-billed which is the default Dowitcher along the coast and took some pictures as they were close. After reviewing the pictures at the spot, I noticed that the inner lesser under-wing coverts were white and so they had to be Long-billed Dowitchers! First coastal record for Ecuador and the sixth country record. This site is a fresh-water marsh so would be more suitable for Long-billed than for Short-billed, which is common in the shrimp-farms nearby. No real need to describe the plumage in detail as the two species are basically the same in non-breeding plumage anyway. The color and pattern of the under-wing coverts is the only field character worth mentioning and it is also clearly visible on the photos. The recording was made when I flushed the birds (first part). They flew off and came back again which is the second part of the recording, when they landed at the same spot. They were there in the afternoon when I showed them to another group of bird-watchers.
