Observation details
Small loon in non-breeding type plumage. similar in size to Western Grebe in same general area. Bright white neck and face with white conspicuously and completely surrounding the eye. No chin strap. Strong demarcation between dark hind neck and white fore neck. Bill small and thin, looking thinner than Pacific and held in the classic upturned posture distinctive of the species. Head lacking pronounced peak and rounded but flatter on crown than Pacific. Slight structure, apparent small size, small, thin bill, and lack of notable head peak rules out Common Loon. Head shape, bill posture and thinness, and lack of chinstrap rule out Pacific Loon. I believe I also could make out white flecking on the back, which would rule out Pacific (though not necessarily Common). For timing reference: documented Lake CDA sightings 10/26/2013, 11/9/2011, 11/1/1992.
