Top right corner, in flight comparison to common terns and bonaparte's
Observation details
Small tern, slightly smaller than common. White primaries and secondaries, faint white edging on coverts. Smaller rounded head with narrower slightly shorter bill compared to common. Carpal bar fainter than the dark bar of common. Translucent primaries with thin dark tips. Short dumpy legs when resting, shortest tern on the dock. Foraging technique noticeably different than common, very agile, would quickly flutter up and down over the surface repeatedly before making shallow dives from no more than a few feet above the surface.
