Observation details
Resident crane of India. Huge, mainly pale grey with reddish legs and large bill. Adult has bare red head and upper neck and bare ashy-green crown. Immature has rusty-buff feathering to head and neck, and upperparts are marked with brown. Habitat in well-watered country, marshes, lakes, rivers. Couple mates for life. Male is larger than the female and has wider black band on the red head. Sarus crane is the largest flying bird of India.
