Observation details
At least one at the "bird blinds". Wasn't sure which WCSP subspecies to expect in this part of the U.S., and had trouble when actually looking at the bird determining if it was a dark-lored individual or not. Z.l. oriantha winters in (and migrates through) western Texas, and nominate leucophrys winters in eastern Texas (per range maps shown in the National Geographic Guide, 6th edition). But the NGS guide also shows gambelii wintering in central Texas. So this part of Texas could possibly get, at a minimum, wintering leucophrys and gambelii. I think I initially thought this Pedernales Falls bird was a gambelii, but looking at photos later it appears it actually has some black in the lores (more than what should be shown by gambelii I think). Bill color, however, seems to be similar to gambelii. So what is this--a Gambel's White-crown, or a dark-lored (nominate leucophrys or oriantha) bird?
