Observation details
A kingbird seen in the dry mudflat at northwest corner of the park (from parking lot, if you take the trail straight ahead, then the dry mudflat to your left). Only viewed briefly around 9:15 AM and at a far distance w/ scope. Gray throat, yellow belly, dark tail. Blurry photos seem to suggest yellow all the way up to the breast (though it could just be a trick of the light on distant photos). In flight photos, appears to be a fairly notched tail, with no evidence of white edging, and a pretty thick and long bill in profile (though pics are quite distant and blurry). These combined seem to suggest a Tropical Kingbird. A Western Kingbird would be also considered rare this far into October. Foraged on the dried mud near a Black Phoebe and Say's Phoebe, and it had a brief dust-up with the Black Phoebe. After a minute or two, it flew northwest over the trees and building. Wish we could have gotten better looks! After reviewer opinion, deemed to be sufficient for a Tropical Kingbird.
