Observation details
I walked from the hunters check in to the palila discovery trail with the primary purpose of looking for palila. I was wondering if I was going the right way most of the time but did eventually arrive. I didn’t find a palila at the discovery trail but shortly after leaving the discovery trail heading back to my car I did hear one and was able to get nice views and photos plus audio. It was a husky finch. Bright yellow above with bright white belly. Black bill was very stubby. Back gray. Reminiscent of a pine grosbeak in general appearance and voice. Eating mamane flowers. I saw two more palila within the first mile heading back from the discovery trail. That was pretty cool since I was starting to feel like I might not find one after turning back from the discovery trail.
