Habitat: Monsoon evergreen forest The last 2 cuts were recorded at 0800 h on May 12, 1978. CW6 calling session starting at 1230 h, undisturbed. The female is probably an F1 hybrid, and the adult male a lar. There is also a subadult (SA) hybrid (presumably offspring) and hybrid juvenile female in the group, very vocal. The adult lar male gives bursts of hoots after and between the female great calls, whereas the hybrid SA male gives bursts of hoots which usually interrupt the great calls (which is typical of pileatus males). Both adult female and SA male have "rapid hoot series", which are phrases which resemble the bubbly hoot series of pileatus males, but slowed down. The SA male's are higher in pitch and more frequent than the female's. The hybrid daughter, a 4-y old juvenile, sings along with her mother's great calls. Her great calls are not as loud, and have a different pattern, being slower with fewer hoots of longer duration, hence more lar-like. This group has been used to illustrate that the gibbons' great call patterns are inherited, and not learned. The genes for great call patterns are inherited from both mother and father. There is one good burst of hoots by the adult lar male near the end of the section. The last several minutes of this cut were recorded on May 12 at 0800 h, and contain 8 more great call sequences with the 2 females singing. Both adult and SA males also can be heard clearly.
