Observation details
****MEGA. First Illinois state record. Found upon entering the sanctuary by Steve Huggins, all saw the bird, though Andy Sigler did not get a diagnostic view while others did, saw the gray hood and white malar on an overall yellow kingbird. It then flew across the sanctuary, where we relocated it again for a moment with Bob Hughes. Then it flew into the prairie grass along the edge of the lake, where most got diagnostic views for about 30 seconds to a minute before it took off again and disappeared. As of 12:20 PM it hadn’t been relocated. While the photo is not exactly diagnostic, it does show a yellow-bellied kingbird with a thin bill and a very dark hood. This bird appeared to be an immature as well.
