Observation details
First observation at 0850. 1 counted on property. Note: The Sevenmile Creek restoration site is not yet open to public access. Initially photographed in the distance in reach 3 and passed off as an Empidonax. Based on later study of photos, this seems to be the EAPH as well. Seen again at 0926, flying in from the east at ca 2-3x shrub height; flew past us and landed near the top of a dead Alnus incana over a pond in the middle of reach 3. Made 1 sharp 'chep' call in flight, reminiscent of WIWA and totally unlike any local flycatcher I am familiar with. Good views of it perched. Blackish head with no evident eyering, generally rounded with a flattened top, somewhat like a kingbird. Smaller than a kingbird, with different body shape. Raising and lowering tail frequently while perched. Observed perched in the alder for several minutes; noted yellowish breast and belly with dusky sides; square or notched all-black tail. Shape and coloration wrong for wood-pewee. Finally flew down and out of sight near the west-most pond in reach 3; heard a second rendition of the 'chep' call from that area less than a minute later. Did not see the phoebe again. Detections (number 15-minute intervals in which the species was detected): 2 on property.
