Observation details
My apologies for the late report on this rare bird but I could not identify it in the field and did not realize the rarity in the Central Valley. I got help with the ID from my photos and then saw Gary Woods' report. Very plain gray above with some white edging on the feathers and black wing tips. Mostly white below with a long, straight bill which it kept open the entire time we saw it (which was not very long). There was a dark line through the eye most prominent on the lores. It had a white supercillium. I never saw the legs as it was in water to its belly.
