Observation details
Female-plumaged bird foraging briefly and loafing +/- directly across from the marina along the rocky shore. Smaller than Common Mergansers but looked about twice the size of nearby Ruddy Ducks. All-dark including eye and bill except for large very pale sandy brown face patch, extending from the base of the bill just below the eye to the sides of the neck, down to ~just above the breast. Cap and nape blackish. No contrast between upperparts and flanks as comparatively tiny Ruddy Duck would show.
