Observation details
So it turns out that this is the bird whose call I could not identify (and I thought belonged to a passerine) when I first heard it back on August 20. I had a chance to study this bird for about ten minutes and it perched in the open for some time but I had no camera. Presumed immature bird. Overall rufous-brown in color, including upperparts and head. Eyespots were slightly darker than the rest of the head, but not as dark as in adult. Markings on head were mostly restricted to forehead, which was covered with fine buffy streaks, not spots. At least two rows of bold white spots on scapulars/coverts. Tail seemed pretty long, dark brown, with ~ 6 cinnamon (not white) brighter bands. Constantly calling (unsolicited) and it seemed to be quite restless, probably because it was being mobbed by some passerines and hummingbirds. Call recorded, bird never used other kinds of vocalizations but readily responded to Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl imitation by approaching. My overall impression is that this might be an immature Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, but I will try to go back with a camera and relocate the bird
