Observation details
At 7:20 this morning, on the E/NE end Pond 3 where Bullrushes meet the waters edge, I discovered a frozen (not really) American Bittern. I stood at a small viewing spot (33.6611, -117.8452) on the trail between Pond 1 and Pond 3, looking NE into Pond 3. I noted the broad, dark brown stripes on breast, blackish-brown malar stripe, and good sized yellowish dagger-like bill. It was larger than either a Green Heron or Least Bittern. Behavior of American: head held high and bird was completely motionless (frozen). Then the Bittern stepped silently back into rushes...
