Observation details
Jeremy spotted this bird flycatching within the brush at the tennis courts and the three of us studied this bird for some time. Very small empidonax flycatcher. It moved several times, perching low in the brush 2 feet off the ground, but we never saw it totally in the open or on top. The bird was silent. It occasionally flicked its tail, but not as frequently as a phoebe. We were able to view it partially obscured by leaves through the scope in a bush at the head of where the creek runs in under the brushy area. The leaves (including stem) on this bush were measured to be 4 inches. From the size comparison photo (attached), this bird cannot be over 5 inches in length. The back color was greenish-gray, the wingbars a buffy white color, the breast color was an off-white or slightly buffy tint. Also noted black legs and a yellow lower mandible. In addition to size considerations, where acadian should be larger, acadian should have appeared much greener. Thirty minutes later we were able to obtain a photo of the eye of the bird as it perched in a different location which shows a pretty bold white eyering. This should eliminate willow and alder flycatcher which would have little to no eyering, and would have less contrasting wing bars. Taking all the evidence together, we believe this to have been a least flycatcher.
