Common Loons, Onondaga Lake, Liverpool Marina, August 21, 2019
Observation details
Two loons were observed swimming in Onondaga Lake west of the Liverpool Marina jetty. They appeared to be in plumage that was transitioning from breeding to non-breeding plumage. However, it is possible that the birds were juveniles. Besides diving, they both engaged for several minutes (approx. 20 minutes) in synchronized splashing, pirouetting, bursting up out of the water, and neck arching while the faced each other. The cavorting appeared to be courtship displays or pair-bonding activity.
