Observation details
On its own. Looked mostly like ABDU with olive bill, paler head and neck with no green, dark crown and eyeline, overall dark plumage with buff edgings, and lack of white on outer tail feathers. When I tried to flush it to see the wing pattern, it only flapped once when I got very close, revealing wings in primary molt and only a narrow white edge to the purple speculum. This may suggest some Mallard ancestry but this species can show a narrow white border. Perhaps being so close allowed me to see it.
