Observation details
Seen as close as 15 feet feeding along the NE shore of Thompson Reservoir. It stayed by itself and fed mostly right at the water's edge or 1-2 inches deep in the water. About the size of a Spotted Sandpiper which was seen nearby, but posture much more upright and with slightly longer legs and neck and relatively smaller head perhaps. Bill black, slightly shorter than head. Legs yellow to yellow-green. Face, throat, breast and upper belly uniformly buffy brown. Lower belly and undertail coverts white. Crown, hindneck, and back darker brown with distinct dark streaks. Wings appeared scaly as in Baird's Sandpiper -- dark with light brown feather edgings. Eye dark. There was a faint mottling on the side of the neck and breast but it did not continue across the undersides. When walking, it thrust its head rapidly back and forth in an exaggerated fashion like a pigeon.
