Observation details
This juvenile was associating with a Semipalmated Sandpiper. On the WESA, note the dark legs (greenish, actually, on this young bird); broad-based, downcurved bill that droops near the tip; strikingly rufous upper scapulars and “anchor-shaped” fill on some lower scapulars. The absence of spotting and chevroning on the breast and flanks in August helps to age the bird. Note also the roundish, hump-backed appearance in some photos. WESA’s also have partially webbed toes.
