Media notes
Eight cuts from a male bird that was moving both on the ground and up in conifers in a small meadow, surrounded by grazed coniferous forest. The first cut is natural, and while vocalizing the bird was perched high and hidden in a tall spruce tree. The later cuts are after playback, and are mostly while perched at mid-height in a tall, dead conifer. The third cut (the longest) starts out with the bird on the ground at very close range, giving a variety of calls. It then flies to various perches and culminates in the louder two note song-like vocalization. The White-winged Crossbill-like trilled phrases were always given when on a high, exposed perch. A second male and at least one female were seen off and on nearby during these recordings.
