Media notes
Rear of bird show species' distinctive convergence of white uppertail coverts close to the tail-tip; see ML170452211 for a cropped image providing a close-up of this tell-tale feature. This also shows plumage characteristics (and leg color) of a breeding-plumage female, which is retained relatively late. Also, males migrate notably earlier than females, lessening the likelihood of this being a male.
Observation details
This shows a detail distinctive for this species, the convergence of long white uppertail coverts close to tail-tip. Plumage details and leg color are compatible with female breeding condition. (Females are late migrants; far later than males.) This species often is seen, as here, with head partially underwater while foraging. No aggression toward other nearby species was seen or shown in my photos of this Ruff.
