Observation details
Male seen on rocky island in close comparison to male Mallards. I first noticed this bird while it was resting due to the very dark brown body and tail. It then proceeded to walk around the island and preen for the several minutes, allowing better views of head and solid brown tail. The speculum was turquoise blue, rather than the purple that is expected on MALL. Head unstreaked tan with dark line through eye and olive bill. Summer-plumaged male MALL eliminated due to brown tail, clean separation between dark brown body and pale head, and dark line through eye. No black at gape to suggest Mottled, and not dark enough for Black Duck. The bird lacked upturned tail feathers or green in head that would suggest hybridization.
