Observation details
Smaller than mallard, black bill, rusty brown near bill, golden cheeks and brow, pale breast with blurry dark belly spot. Mottled brownish wings. Keeps itching the black belly spot - oil? Head shape reminiscent of goldeneye. In camera, eye is pale gold or yellow. Overall paler than female mallards nearby. On second to last island (last island with solar panel) as you travel west along the south edge of salt pond A16. Island also has two Canvasback and other ducks (mostly Mallards). Photos. After comparing our photos to other Common Goldeneye photos for the county (https://ebird.org/media/catalog?taxonCode=comgol&sort=rating_rank_desc&mediaType=p®ionCode=US-CA-085), especially Garrett Lau's recent photos of an immature Common Goldeneye at Shoreline Lake, we believe this bird is also an immature Common Goldeneye. Thanks also to Dan Bloch for his feedback!
