Observation details
See photos for species confirmation. Bird was a patient brought to Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center of Roanoke from this location. Callers reported an "egret" that they were concerned about due to it being easy to approach and seemed weak. Brief reporting from a Conservation Officer additionally addressed concerns. Pictures sent by rescuer confirmed bird was Wood Stork and not an egret. Two staff members from the Center went to go asses the situation and possibly capture the bird due to the unusual nature of one being found here--upon arrival bird was easily approached and captured by staff, making nearly no effort to get away. Bird was extremely emaciated, critically dehydrated, and covered in ectoparasites and it was decided to be admitted to the center due to poor health. Patient is currently undergoing treatment and in critical care with a guarded prognosis for recovery. Uploading patient record to eBird due to rarity of species for this area.
