Observation details
Not sure if it's due to the time of the day or the time of the breeding season, this species was not as vocal as we expected. The predominant type of sound we heard was the rich "whip" calls (recorded, started about 10 seconds in; some Ash-throated Flycatchers were making alarm calls in the background). Only very occasionally did the "whip" calls burst into a short phrase of rolling "brree" calls. Viewing was also difficult. They loved to stayed inside cottonwoods. The birds flycatching out of cottonwood trees turned out to be either western kingbirds or phainopeplas. We got some distant partial views of this species with their obviously thick bills. Two is probably a safe count. It's the number of birds calling we heard at the same time.
