Observation details
*** Rare and local breeding bird. Bird was seen while paddling between 2 census points. I noticed a bird atop a muskrat mound. When I put the glass on it, it was a KIRA preening after a down pour. I took some record shots then paddled closer for a few more shots. Stayed at least 50 yards away. No Tapes/Vocalizations used. Unsolicited. Returned, with permission, after the survey route was complete to look for young. No sign of anything. Previously not detected during this year's survey period. Large, deep chestnut rail with a long, slightly decurved bill. Lacking the blueish-grey face patch of VIRA. The rest can be explained in the photos. Never vocalized.
