Observation details
The attached photo was taken by Pipo Grajales, of the San Juan Star newspaper, in May 13 or 14, 1990, and published May 15. It shows a Short-eared Owl in an area of Vega Alta which is not identified. I have assigned it urban/rural Vega Alta until more accurate data is obtained. The caption in the photo, "Owl's well in Vega Alta" is a play of words with the phrase "All's well." The clipping has faded with age, but is all I have. The name "Lechuza Real," used in reference to this bird in the bottom of the photo is the name in Spanish given to this species by Stuart Danforth in his book "Los Pájaros de Puerto Rico" and roughly translates to "Royal Owl," because of its large size.
