Observation details
Continuing individual hanging around the lake with MALLs. Had suspicions this bird was a pure Mexican Duck as the only knock against a pure bird on this individual was the pale edging to the rects, but after looking into photos it looked to me that they were worn which was why they were so pale. Passed the bird along to Andrew Engilis with my concerns and this was his response: “ Caleb – Thanks for passing this along. This does look really good for a Mexican Duck. I am not worried about the amount of white edging on the feathers, which seems wear related. The internal markings on each rectrice is good for MEDU. There is variation in tail traits in Mexican Duck, that at this writing, unreported. Based on plumage this is an adult male in Basic Plumage. This is the north most record I know of vagrant MEDU.”
