Observation details
(High Count = 2) A life bird for me, and a wonderful sighting at that. First encountered a pair dueting at dusk nearby. (Is this odd? See end of comment). Thinking I might see them I played a tape and they responded and flew into where I had fun dim-light looks at one individual, all streaky and black-eyed and amazingly tiny, then watched their silhouettes as they apparently attempted to copulate. They continued to call for a while. I then walked along Forest Service roads and heard another bird some time later calling in the distance, away from the pair. Interestingly the barred owl was calling at the same time, in the same general direction. Lastly when I returned to my car there was another individual calling, again a good distance from the previous birds. Later submitting this checklist I tried to read up on female vocalizations but found little. Of the pair I observed, they both were definitely calling, though on different pitches and one with only single hoot notes while the other did the double note calls. I could clearly track the birds for a while by silhouette and they hung next to each other in a tree, and came in fluttering silent contact in what I could only describe as an attempt at copulation.
