Observation details
Juvenile that caused some confusion about identification because it is so different from the adult. Not identified in the field but afterward from photos. Very dark overall, being dark olive-brown above and slaty on underparts; faint black facial patch from eye through auriculars; crown dark; tail slaty. Most distinctive feature was bicolored bill, the maxilla black and the mandible bright orange-yellow. The bill shape matched that of a brush-finch and was a bit thinner and pointier as is typical of this species. Short, hopping scratches at ground with feet, with tail slightly fanned with those movements.
