Observation details
Getting late, but good numbers of redpolls still present. I know that a Hoary Redpoll has been seen in both Belgrade and Oakland by Don Mairs and David Ladd over the past several days. The Belgrade flock of Commons was almost 200 birds today. Another Hoary was reported in Waterville by Peter Vickery. This is a new bird for the season at this locality. The bird showed deepening buff in the auriculars and more worn greater coverts tips (i.e. narrower white wing bar) than previous birds. Also, the upperparts, while showing the whitish and gray base color were darker than previous birds. Even so, this color is clearly paler and whiter/grayer than all the now equally worn and browner Common Redpolls. This Hoary Redpoll showed very limited and fine steaks on the sides of the breast and upper flanks. The lower flanks and undertail were white. There was one tiny and thin shaft streak on the central undertail covert (see photos).
