Observation details
Medium-sized Sterna tern perched on orange buoy along with Forster's and Black Terns. On perched bird, noted darker primaries, red bill and feet (compared to orange on Forster's), and shorter tail. The tail length was about even with the primary projection. Comparison photos illustrate how much longer the tail is on Forster's Tern. The bird flew during the observation period revealing a dark "wedge" on the primaries and notably on the underwing, much darker coloration on the trailing edge of the primaries. The bird circled around and displaced the Forster's Tern, who flew to the buoy the COTE was perched on initially.
