Observation details
MEGA*** Continuing bird found during the RGV Birding Festival; Observed the bird for over an hour, initially at quite a distance and then, at much closer range. Immediate first impressions were the bird's overall size (Belted Kingfisher size, much larger than Green Kingfisher) and massive bill and head (seems proportionally larger than Ringed, almost as if you take the body of a Belted and add the head of a Ringed). Watched it hover and plunge dive for prey a few times. Also observed it perched for quite a while at close distance. The reduction of spotting on the scapulars and wing coverts in addition to size really helped separate from Green. The bird did not vocalize during the observation period.
