Media notes

Subtitle: Amphipsalta cingulata. These cicadas were noisy in the beech forest surrounding Lake Okataina. The first part of the tape was made with parabola at 30' to give general impression, then with parabola again at 10'. Last part of tape was made with no parabola when microphone was held in hand at 2'. Although low frequency notes are louder in the last part of tape, there should be no "proximity effect" with this high quality, dynamic, flat response, omnidirectional mike which has its bass hole near the back. I could not hear the bass notes well with my ears at 30' or 10', and had to get close to hear them. It seems to be the same with the mike. First portion = general sounds in forest Second portion = A. cingulata; A. zelandica in chorus. Cicadetta muta in foreground Third portion = A. cingulata Identified by J.S. Dugdale. Other Behaviors: Reproduction.
