Media notes
herring gull to right this image but note especially gull to left with longer legs - especially tibia and so taller than herring gull, slightly larger size and bulk than herring gull, and fully dark tip to bill. note also pinkish legs on both birds and pale eyes. this may be only a herring gull in some phase of immature plumage, but it is an interesting bird
Observation details
one gull in a large group of herring gulls caught our attention. this bird had longer tibia than the herring gulls, perhaps longer tarsus too, so stood taller. bird is slightly bulkier than others in group. bird has brownish cast to mantle compared to adult plumaged herring gulls. eye appears pale as for other herring gulls. bill is fully dark tipped also suggesting some immaturity of a herring gull. this dark tip to bill is unlike the dark band slightly proximal to tip of a ring-billed gull which might be significantly smaller bird than this gull. this may be a typical herring gull not yet fully molted to final plumage, but it is just enough different to be noted here. see also further description at < https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S56933431 >
