Observation details
An excellent find by Matthew Gould. Following the Pine Tree Loop up to the previously provided coordinates, I arrived to the bird singing near the creek. I followed the complex chattering song of alternating phrases back to the area surrounding the large boulder visible on satellite imagery. As previously warned, views were brief, and I only managed to get naked-eye looks at a small songbird with olive green back, jet black head, and bright white spectacles. I then spent and hour and change chasing my tail while trying to get a photo. Audio documentation opportunities were good and I took an iPhone recording of a series of song phrases transitioning into the infamous BCVI shrad call. Very cool. As I started down, I noticed a printer paper sign attached with green flagging right at the creek. It stated “Do Not Disturb: Scientific Experiment in Progress - NMSU Fish & Wildlife department.” It looked fairly new and was right by the territory.
