NPR/NGS RADIO EXPEDITIONS Show: Arizona Frogs Log of DAT #: 4 Engineer: Bill Deputy Date: 7/18/02 (discussing mic) :36 all right we better lock the vehicles because we're going to be far enough away that someone could have their way with them. :53 -1:25 rummaging through the car, keys jingle, door slams, zippers 1:25 hey dennis, and brent, and erin¿ I hadn't mentioned it much this year, but rob fisher emailed me and said if it rains hard we're going to go and do the chopper and ground truthing of the breeding sites, so that's another trip that might come up. 1:52 FX - zippers 1:59 I think I need batteries¿ 2:22 quarter of a mile, something like that. 2:30 (off mic discussion of mics) 2:37 boardwalk be a place we can lead the guys, do you think? 2:38 car horn, unlock car door, door slam, zippers 3:17 their perception is not that. We saw all of a sudden 'wow, all these puddles, rain!' so it looked, but probably that's the second rain here. There's been a fair amount of rain this far north, because of the mountains. Exactly. 3:53 I called the refuge and said that we were the interlopers today at willow pond. 4:08 did you guys find any more ponds that had water that you knew before today, dennis? 4:25 so we've got the two tanks to hit for bullfrogs for sure? 4:31 cecil do you end up doing most of your work at night? 4:34 on this project, well.. no, most of this one at night except that we're doing some assessments on the best way to capture tadpoles to see what species they are and most of that's daytime work. We are working with the toads or spadefoot themselves, they're mostly active at night but the tadpoles we use daylight so we can see what we're doing. But this part, when we're looking at the adults it's almost exclusively at night, except occasionally when we get daytime storms. 5:11 JB What do you like about coming out here? 5:18 to me, to a biologist, this is mecca, this is heaven, there are so many things that are coming out, the amphibians, the reproductive ants and termites, and everything's coming out and feeding on them.. the scorpions are running around carrying babies on their back, if you're interested in biology, this is a fantastic place to come and se what's here, and if you're a photographer it's even more fun. You can come out and take a bunch of fun pictures. The sounds, the smells, when we were driving in today¿ you know, you could heard that storm. When you're out in one, sometimes it's noisier than you like, but it's¿ I've been in the desert now for 30 years, and I feel blessed that I got a job to stay here. 6:14 when we were driving in, it was oe of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen in a long long time. Are you still astounded by the sky? 6:22 it' just.. it changes every time, it's just absolutely glorious. You get torn. Well, I like to photograph, but you know, that doesn't mix very easily with research, because you're always running someplace to do something or other. But it's breathtaking so I take holidays, and when I have vacation time I go someplace to take pictures instead of data. 6:55 where are we going now? 6:58 we're on aravokus sienna, which is a part of the b.a. National wildlife refuge, near the town of iraguaoca, at... (Notes truncated)
