Observation details
I heard about these birds through Facebook, and since I didn't see them in the morning, I returned to confirm dowitcher ID and study the birds. The birds couldn't have been more obliging. I was able to walk around the bay and get relatively close to them, so that they filled my scope eyepiece at 40X. They frequently were preening and holding their form still. I took these notes: Rufous wash into undertail coverts. A few chevrons and spots down the flank. Yellowy olive legs. Inner coverts still seem to be moulting in, or perhaps retained. 2 birds described above--4 birds much paler (fresher and paler plumage). Fine tiger stripped coverts and mantle, black centred, not appearing to contrast with flanks. Birds were quiet while foraging. Bill had hints of lighter greenish base, especially in the lower mandible. Side of neck slightly spotted. Birds did not appear overly round. I had poor incomplete views, but the underwings did not seem to have any unbarred portions. Occasional singing in intraspecific interactions--matching SBDO.
