Observation details
Two birds were observed from approximately 11:15 to 11:20 a.m. They were preening nearly constantly during the time I observed them. They were in a muddy area between the recently planted 2-3 inch corn (into bean stubble from last year) & 5 feet or so from the lake edge. They were about 10-15 feet west of a small rivulet that runs from the culvert under the road into the lake. It was overcast, ~70 degrees with SE winds about 15 mph & gusty. There were severe storms in Kansas & Nebraska the previous night (night of May 17-18) with a preliminary report of over 30 tornadoes int those two states. Radar indicated rainfall shows a trace to a tenth of an inch of rain falling in the Horseshoe Lake vicinity the night of May 17-18. Video & digi-scoped photographs were taken from inside my vehicle at a distance of approximately 50 yards.
