Observation details
**very rare; found by John Fritz; M; My photos show the large black bill, complete white neck collar, triangular white forehead extending through superciliaries, black bar on front edge of brown crown, complete black breast band, upperparts similar to but fractionally paler and and grayer than SEPL’s, and long dull-colored legs. Less visible in the photo but evident in the field were subtle rusty tones on the cheeks and crown. Compared to some other male Wilson’s Plovers I have seen, this bird showed less rusty in these places and also less black between the bill and the eye. Male Wilson's Plovers in alternate plumage (showing black on the forehead and breast-band, such as the one described above) are distinctive and differ clearly from all other species of plover. The species with which it is sometimes confused in our area is Semipalmated Plover, which differs obviously in its much less extensive and differently-shaped white forehead patch; much smaller and pale-based bill; and brighter legs. Multiple features also readily exclude Snowy Plover, Common Ringed Plover, and Greater Sand-Plover.
