Observation details
Medium sized and sticky on appearance. Heron with light breast and face, red eye and dark black cap. Plumes were seen hanging from back of head. Sturdy medium dagger like dark gray bill. The bird was standing still at the base of a beaver dam on the river. Found and reported from this spot earlier today by Joann Riggle. I watched it for close to 10 minutes before it flew upstream low. During the time I watched it it stood still. Unfortunately I didn’t have a scope or binos on it when it flew. With the naked eye I saw the familiar profile of a flying night heron: profile dominated by dark broad wings, large head and longish bill without the impression of having much of tail. Upperparts appeared dark as would be expected. I didn’t get looks at the legs.
